MICHAEL GIBLIN REACHES THE AGE OF NEARLY NINETY

Was one of Vail’s Most Highly Respected Citizen – Died, June 23

Vail, Iowa, June 30, 1925

The community was shocked to hear of the death of Michael Giblin, one of Vail’s oldest and most respected citizens, who passed away Tuesday evening, June 23d, after a short illness.

On Wednesday morning preceding his death while looking through the garden he suffered a stroke but managed to get to the house. In the few days which followed he lay in a state of semi-consciousness u ntil the Angel of death came to claim his soul.

Michael Giblin was born September 29, 1845, in the parish of Bellentuber county, Roscommon, Ireland at the time of his death had reached the age of 79 years, 9 months and 24 days.

He immigrated to America in 1866. Coming to the state of New York, later coming to Sterling Illinois, where he engaged in farming.

In 1868 he was married to Miss Margaret Mitchell, and to this union was born five children: Thos. J. of Near Denison; Mrs. J.W. Brogan, of Vail, Mrs. P.J. Cody of Sioux City, who died June 9, 1920; Jo hn L. of Cedar Rapids, who died April 22, 1918; and Anna, who died December, 1888. They also fostered two children, Wm. F. Giblin, now of Wagner, S. Dak., and a grandchild, John B. Giblin of Milwaukee , Wis.

Mr. Giblin came to Crawford county and settled on a farm in Hayes township March, 1880, residing there until he retired March, 1905, when he moved to Vail.

Mrs. Giblin passed away November 17, 1907.

Two years later he was united in marriage to Miss Ellen Connley, who survives him.

Mr. Giblin was well known in Crawford and surrounding counties, and numbered his friends by his acquaintances.

He was a successful farmer for many years and after retiring to Vail enjoyed the fruits of his labor.

The funeral was held Friday morning at 9 o’clock from Saint Ann’s church, Rev. J.J. Keane celebrating Mass. Burial was made in Saint Ann’s cemetery.

The pallbearers were: John Harrington of Dixon, Nebr., Andrew Harrington, John Hickey, Frank Aylwood, Wm. Gallagher and Bert Mitchell.

Those attending the funeral from a distance were: Mr. and Mrs. W.F. Giblin and daughter, Madeline, C.C. Sadler, Mrs. Peter O’Connell, Mrs. Hugh Costello and Beck Mitchell of Wagner, S. Dak., Mr. and M rs. J.B. Giblin and son, Ronald, of Milwaukee, Wisconsin, J.S. Giblin of Hot Springs, S. Dak., T. J. and Raymond Cody of Sioux City, James Brogan of Chicago, Elsie Brogan of Cedar Falls, Mrs. Margaret  Giblin and children of Cedar Rapids, Mrs. Kate Monaghan and Mrs. James McNamara of Omaha and John Harrington of Dixon, Nebr.

MRS. ELLEN GIBLIN

Funeral services were held Wednesday morning, Feb. 4 for Mrs. Ellen Giblin who passed away Sunday morning, Feb. 1 after a brief illness.

Ellen Connolly was born in Ireland. In 1909, she came to this country and in the same year was united in marriage to Michael Giblin in Saint Patrick’s church in New York City. In the same year they mo ved to Vail where Mrs. Giblin has lived ever since. Her husband passed away in 1923 and since that time she has lived alone in her little home.

Mrs. Giblin had been in failing health for some time, but no one thought her trouble to be serious and she was seen downtown Friday. When neighbors did not see her Saturday, the became alarmed and whe n no one came to the door in answer to their summons, Marshal Maguire forced a rear door open and Mrs. Giblin was found in bed, but insisted that nothing was wrong with her.

Sunday morning she was much weaker and Father Clark and Dr. Maire were called. Shen she attempted to arise from her bed, she fell, suffering a stroke. She was moved to the catholic rectory where the R ev. Clark and sister Miss Elizabeth Clark cared for her until she passed away that evening with her beloved advisor at her side.

Here indeed is a loss to our community. She went on her way, bothering no one with her troubles. She leaves a brother Thomas Connelly, New York City, to mourn her passing besides a host of friends.

The Rev. D.L. Clark conducted services from Saint Ann;Saint Ann’s church Wednesday morning and celebrated the requiem mass. Interment was made in the family lot in Saint Ann’s cemetery.

Thomas Giblin was born in the parish of Ballentubber county, Roscommon, Ireland, in 1836 and died at the home of his daughter, Mrs. John S. Brogan, near Vail, April 18, 1920 aged 84 years.

He came to America in 1864 and settled at Brooklyn, N.Y. where he worked in the iron foundry of Hotchkiss & Fields until 1878, when he came west to Illinois and settled near Sterling. In 1880 he came to Iowa and settled near Vail where, except for a period of four years spent in South Dakota, he has lived continuously up to the time of his death.

Mr. Giblin was married the year of his arrival in America to Annie McLaughlin at Brooklyn, N.Y. To this union were born eight children, three of whom have preceded him in death, two daughters and one son. The others, John S., of South Dakota; Mrs. M. Devaney, of near Vail; Mrs. David McCullough, of Hendricks, Minn.; Mrs. John S. Brogan, of near Vail; Mrs. George H. Knott of near Manilla, and one adopted son, Frank, of Tyndall, S.D. were all present at his funeral.

The funeral was held at St. Ann’s church Tuesday at 10 o’clock, conducted by Rev. James Murphy, and he was laid to rest in St. Ann’s cemetery.

JAMES W. BROGAN

The Vail community was saddened by the news of the death of James W. Brogan, who passed away on Friday noon, Dec. 30, after a long illness.

Mr. Brogan, a highly respected citizen, was the son of James and Bridget Fineran Brogan, and was born in DeWitt, Clinton county, Iowa on April 18, 1872. He attained the age of 66 years, 8 months and 1 2 days.

When a small child he came west to Crawford county with his parents and settled on a farm southeast of Vail. He received his early education in the rural school in West Side township Dist. No. 8, late r attending the Vail high school. He followed the occupation of farming, spending the entire time in Crawford county.

Mr. Brogan was united in marriage in October, 1897 to Miss Margaret Giblin of Hayes township, who preceded him in death by six years and one month. To this union were born nine children, all of whom s urvive him and are as follows: Mrs. Elsie Fitzgibbons of Superior, Wis.; Leonard of San Francisco, Calif.; Mrs. Anna Cadkin, Mrs. Florence Patton, James and Edward of Chicago, Lloyd of Vail and Edna a nd Orville at home.

Mr. Brogan was a kind an indulgent father and husband, a good and a true friend. He was  always taking an active part in the affairs of the community. He served fifteen years o n the Vail public school board.

Besides his nine children, Mr. Brogan leaves to mourn two brothers and John S. and Peter T. Brogan of Vail, and one sister, Mrs. Kate Lynch of Colfax. Another sister, Mrs. Mary Lynch, of Omaha, preced ed him in death three years ago.

He was a devout member of St. Ann’s church from which he was buried New Year’s day. A large cortege of friends followed his remains to St. Ann’s cemetery, where he was laid to rest beside his wife. Th e pallbearers were, John Lynch, John Brogan, William Lynch, George Robinson, Earl Harrington, and Rapheal Walsh.

Born on November 29, 1918 in Vail, Iowa to (father) James Brogan and (mother) Margaret Giblin. Mr. Brogan owned t he donut shop in Gourmet House at Fairway Park Shopping Center in Hayward, Ca. Before that, he worked as a stationary engineer with the city and county of San Francisco. He enjoyed collecting coins, f ishing and writing stories. He lived in Hayward, CA for 23 years before moving to Carson City. He served as a marine at Iowa Jima in World War II. He is survived by Sons – Danny Brogan (Livermore, CA)  Curtis Brogan (Carson City) James Brogan (Richmond, CA) Daughters – Janice Wimer (Carson City, NV) Ronda Smith (Castro Valley, CA) Lynette Hunt (Fremont, CA) Denise Brogan-Whitford (Vallejo, CA) Nore en Faircloth (Lake Tahoe, CA) 16 Grandchildren and 1 great-grandchild. He was married to Alice Elizabeth Brogan. Sister Joyce Allen Brogan was born on 13 Feb 1940.  She died on 4 Jul 2006.  Sister Joyce (Michaelita) Brogan, OSF, 66, of 1001 Davis St., Dubuque, died at 3:20 a.m. Tuesday, July 4, 2006, at Holy Family Hall Infirmary.

Services will be at 1 p.m. Thursday at Mount St. Francis Chapel. Burial will be in Mount Calvary Cemetery. Friends may call from 4 to 7 p.m. today at the chapel, where there will be a wake service at 7 p.m. The Miller Funeral Home, East Dubuque, Ill., is in charge of arrangements.

Sister Joyce ministered as a music teacher in the Iowa cities of Holy Cross, Pocahontas, Cascade, and Dubuque (Wahlert High School), as a DRE at Waterloo (St. John and St. Nicholas), as a liturgist at  Middleton, Wis., (St. Benedict Retreat Center) and in music, liturgy and theology for the last 21 years in Epworth, Iowa (Divine Word College). She served as a trustee at Briar Cliff University for 1 0 years. She also directed the choir for the Stonehill Benefit Dinners from 1994 to 2004.

She was born on Feb. 13, 1940, in Vail, Iowa, daughter of Lloyd and Alice Brogan. She grew up in Sioux City, Iowa, and graduated from Heelan High School in 1957.

She earned a bachelor of arts degree from Briar Cliff University, a masters in music education degree from the University of Iowa, and a masters in liturgical studies degree at Catholic University of America.

She entered the Sisters of St. Francis on Sept. 3, 1959, and made her final profession of religious vows on Aug. 12, 1967.

Surviving are two brothers, Paul (Therese) and Bill (Dixie); two sisters, Dorothy (Vincent) Kramper and Jean Roberts; nieces and nephews; and her Franciscan Sisters, with whom she shared 45 years of her life.
